MOhemp Energy: Biodiesel saves the day $$$: In Australia, Northern Oil's biorefinery that produces biodiesel from tires is looking to use some of that biodiesel to produce its own power in an effort to significantly reduce or completely eliminate it's $1.5 million annual power bill.

     HempToday: If we look strictly at the CBD value chain, where in the world would you say the laws are most supportive to full sector development?
    Bob Hoban: The Latin American market loves cannabinoid extracts. More importantly, many of the governments in Latin America are supportive of widespread cultivation, processing, and use of hemp as a naturally occurring wellness product. The Latin American markets also have their eyes on the import and export of such products and materials, which creates opportunities in the burgeoning global cannabis economy.

    The EU has been a bit slower to come to the CBD party, but a number of cannabinoid-rich products have been evaluated and approved under FDA-equivalent standards and are making a major push in the EU marketplace. Overall, at present, I believe that Latin America provides the most widespread opportunities; especially considering the extent of various nationalized healthcare systems in that part of the world and government support.

    HT: When can we expect full clarity for CBD in the United States? Is that a five- or 10-year proposition? What can we look forward to (or dread) regarding federal agencies’ treatment of CBD in the next 1-2 years?
    BH: Unfortunately, I see an interruption in the U.S.-based cannabinoid extract marketplace before there is clarity. Fortunately, however, the debate is beginning to shift away from the baseless claims that CBD (and other naturally occurring cannabinoids) are illegal, controlled substances per se, to how and where these products will be regulated.

    The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) need to step up and take the issue away from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which readily concedes that it has no jurisdiction over (U.S.) Farm Bill hemp and exempted plant material-based extracts and derivatives. This is a slow and tedious process which could take several years.

study on selective properties of Kraft lignin–natural rubber composites containing different plasticizers

Abstract

Effect of plasticizer type on the kraft lignin–natural rubber composite microstructure and selected properties was determined. The composites were prepared with addition of a commonly used naphthenic oil plasticizer to study the decomposition product of polyurethane (glycerolysate) and its characteristics. Kraft lignin powder was incorporated into the natural rubber matrix in amounts of 10 and 40 parts per 100 parts of natural rubber (phr). The reference samples were prepared without any lignin present. The chemical interaction between the filler particles and natural rubber macromolecules was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the adhesion was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the adhesion measurements confirmed poor distribution of lignin particles into the natural rubber matrix with increasing filler content. Optimal lignin content in the composites was 10 phr in the case of both plasticizers. Moreover, the results of FTIR verified the formation of non-covalent bonds and the need for modification of the filler to enhance the reinforcing effect in the natural rubber matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical measurements proved that the specimen containing 10 phr of lignin with the use of glycerolysate as plasticizer displayed the highest mechanical performance. It was demonstrated that glycerolysate and naphthenic oil as plasticizing agents showed similar effect on the thermal properties of the prepared composites. Report: Italian wood pellet consumption expected to grow

Italy recently filed a report on its wood pellet market with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s Global Agricultural Information Network, predicting its use of wood pellets will reach 5 million metric tons in 2020.

According to the report, Italy currently consumes approximately 3 million metric tons of wood pellets annually, with domestic consumption accounting for 96 percent of total use. The use of wood pellets is currently expected to increase, reaching 5 million metric tons by 2020.

Only 15 percent of domestic pellet demand in Italy is currently met by domestic production. The country currently imports approximately 85 percent of the pellets it consumes. Last year, Italy imported 1.66 million metric tons of wood pellets, primarily from Austria, Croatia, Germany, Slovenia, France and Czech Republic.

Almost all the wood pellets consumed in Italy are sold in bags. The report estimates no more than 20,000 metric tons are sold as bulk pellets transported with silo trucks. Pellets are mainly sold in retail stores, with approximately 6 percent sold online.

The report shows Italy imported approximately 62,710 tons of wood pellets from Canada last year, down from 85,349 tons in 2015 and 229,180 tons in 2014. The report does not indicate Italy imported any pellets from the U.S. last year.
